Chapter 20 – 4th Spatial Dimension in Human Experience

The Journey

Sometimes the fastest distance between two points is not a straight Line. Sometimes it is a Spiral. Sometimes experiences happen to us that are inexplicable. Sometimes the reality that is instilled into our minds as a little child, which becomes in time and turn the fixed structure of our minds as an adult, becomes impassible. Sometimes the framework of our thinking, the structure of our mind, the structure of our mind view that is echoed and refreshed by all the minds around us, the mind-view of the collective society we grew up into and became, brings us to an enormous puzzlement. Sometimes something happens and we begin to see with our own eyes! Sometimes what makes sense to everybody else doesn’t make sense to us at all. Sometimes an experience happens to us that is so determining that we are never the same again. Sometimes we lose our common sense and begin to wander in the regions of our heart. Sometimes the bottomless depth of what we are opens inside us and we fall into love or we fall into mystery or we fall into ecstasy or we fall into an ocean of emotion and confusion and don’t know who and what we are anymore, and gone forever is the way back to what we used to be. Sometimes the world that we know crumbles and falls apart, and like a little child we must begin all over again. Sometimes we have to travel a far Journey on an unmapped way with only our own little minds to guide us. Sometimes as a newborn space of mind, we have inexplicable experiences inside, mysterious experiences that begin to alter the established structure of our mind. Sometimes when a rigid wire of everlasting thought—Snaps!—and the unbound ends of mental thread spring apart before the customary reflex War of Words can seize and tie and bind and blind the shriveled web of our mind anew, the meshwork of our mind begins to unravel, and disassemble, and de-construct, and shatter apart into disconnected floating pieces, and the space in our mind expands, and consciousness spills like deep inspirations throughout our body and being. Sometimes we lose our mind and our consciousness experientially expands. Sometimes during our human metamorphosis we find ourselves abiding in an inner state of Space. Sometimes what begins to make sense to us is to others insane. Sometimes we have to hide inside the depth of ourselves, like little creatures in shells peeking out to see if it’s safe, so we can survive alive inside for yet another day. Some become lost on this kind of Journey. Some get stuck in the middle with no way onward and no way back. Some die tragically by their own hand because the Journey becomes too terrible to bear. Some reach the far shore of their own expanded consciousness, where Nature’s own sentience becomes the inner space and nature of their consciousness and mind, and once again they are home and safe in the natural nature of what they are.

I have traveled such a Journey.

For some the Journey begins gradually, so that they have time to absorb and reflect and contemplate and cope with the experience. For some, such as for my brother Murray and I, the experience begins suddenly with no warning.

It was May of 1975. I was 35 years old, a family man wed to a life-long friend and blessed with four beautiful children whom I loved dearly. I was a full-time faculty member at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine in East Lansing, Michigan. As a hematologist and oncologist, I was responsible for the care and well being of patients with hematological illness and malignancy, including care for the terminally ill. Grappling daily with suffering, dying and the agony of death, I responded by working long hours and becoming an uncommonly devout Catholic, attending mass every day at a church near the university clinic where I worked. I had been a doctor for 7 years, long enough to know the range and limits of medical knowledge. The range and limits of magic and myth, however, I did not know. I had been a Catholic since they poured the magic water on my head when I was 7 days old, and worshipful toward that orientation since my mind view had been formed by formal Catholic education all through my impressionable years, including Catholic grammar school, high school and college.

On a rainy day on a weekend in May, I had gotten up early before the rest of the family that morning to write a letter to some friends of ours from our parish because I had heard they were having a tragic crises in their family, and I wanted to reach out to them before they made a terribly wrong decision. A family of three, including a darling little Vietnamese girl whom they had adopted from the war-torn country of Vietnam, our friends I was saddened to hear had just separated and were contemplating divorce. After I had finished the letter, I was standing at the window in the quiet of the morning and looking out at the rain, and simply thinking as I watched the rain fall down that I wouldn’t be able to plant the redbud trees in our garden that day as I had planned—and it happened as I stood there—a sensation of pressure alighted on my head and sank down into my body and immersed me in a strange current of fluidic energy that was sensately moving and suffusing throughout the space of my head and down through my body within a conduit of flowing inner spaciousness that I didn’t even know existed inside me, as if the rain falls down on this house of ground and sinks inside where thoughts abide and down—on—in—to currents running through till steady state suspending all motion in unending in a sensate fluid of altered state of Space, wherein I heard a very clear Voice say to me: “Take the letter to them now.”

That was the first experience of that nature I had ever had in my life. A calm clear Voice, and that was exactly what he said. I got in my car, drove across town, knocked on their door, handed the woman the letter and left.

What I viewed as a genuine religious and enlightenment experience began to alter my life profoundly. From that moment onward, the power of my insight and perceptions began to change and I began to see as never before!

In the mental breakdown that followed, or acute attack of reality, depending on how you look at it, I tragically became separated from my family.

In the summer of ’76, one year later, after a visit from my brother Murray who drove all the way from Saratoga, New York to East Lansing, Michigan to tell me about a profound inner experience he had that was flooding him with insight, I left my faculty position at Michigan State University and embarked upon a Journey from which I would never return.

I moved to Saratoga to live with my brother because we were each having inner experiences of a deeply insightful nature that we believed was an extraordinary natural growth process that was expanding our consciousness and the inborn power of our sight. Less than six months later, my brother Murray, an architect, a beautiful man with a beautiful mind, with a beautiful wife and three young children, was dead on the floor with half his head blown off! The shotgun he used at his side where he fell.

He had started having visual hallucinations two weeks before he died. I know. I was there. I thought it was an intense degree of the growth process we had each been experiencing in our own way. I thought that if he could just weather the acute phase of this experience, the intensity of the experience would diminish and he could reintegrate without suffering any harm. I was downstairs in our study reading, waiting for my brother to come home, our diagrams and sketches still on the blackboard where each day we tried to put our thoughts and insights into conceptual form, because that’s the way we were: Talking together about anything and everything and all. Like minds. Like hearts. Two brothers. Very close to each other. Always.

I heard the front door open, and close, and knew my brother was safe at home. I heard his footsteps going up the stairs, rather than coming to wave hello the way he always does. I heard him enter his room directly overhead. A terrible Crash hit the floor! Dumbstruck, I thought he had tipped over a dresser. What terrible distress is this? I went upstairs, knocked on his door. No answer. I spoke to Murray through the door. He didn’t answer. I opened the door.

On that day, in that hour, in that room, we both died.

The Edge and End of the Physical Universe

Here’s a riddle: What changes with the Passage of Time, the Questions or the Answers?

What made the Universe? Where did Human Beings come from? Where is the Edge and End of the Physical Universe?

Here’s the answer: With the Expansion of Knowledge, the Answers keep changing.

Here’s an example: At the end of the 20th century, the Edge and End of the Physical Universe was located 15 to 20 billion light-years away where everything contracts to a point and turns into nothing.

Although the tides and turns of question continue in the mind and heart of each and every one of us, the answers—the Word—and the meaning of words, change. Such as the meaning of the word Big Bang.

In the light of the 4th spatial dimension of depth, where is the Edge and End of the Physical Universe? And what does the word Physical Universe really mean? And which universe are we talking about, or what Universe do we think we’re talking about, when we use that lump-it-all-together word Physical Universe? This is not an esoteric or metaphysical question. This is a structural question. In the 4th spatial dimension, where is the structural Edge and End of the Physical Universe? The ancient question is simply being asked anew. The same question that we as a species asked in 5000 BC, and 500 years ago when the Earth was flat, and all through the 20th century when we weren’t too busy slaughtering each other.

Before exploring the Inner Space of Earth and Man in greater depth, in order not to sound like a mumbling fool with stone in hand on rolling Earth in the presence of the Rising Sun, I want to state my frame of reference. Then I’ll tell you what I’m looking at. Then I’ll tell you what I have seen and see.

Before I venture inward, however, I want to tell you why I, having spent the better part of my life as a medical doctor face-to-face and heart-to-heart amidst suffering and dying and death, am writing this treatise at all.

I have experienced the Ecstasy of Hallucination. Mystery unfurling. Sanity abandoned. And my Brother is dead on the floor. If you are on a Journey, if you have lost your way, if you are surrounded by confusion, if you have hungered to die, if you are reading these words, if you are on the other side of this page, with you looking at me and I looking at you with only the sides of this moment between us, I want you to know I am writing this treatise for you. Everyday, all day long, in the heartfelt harbor of my deepest thoughts and meaning, in the lyrics of every single theme and word, I am writing this treatise for you. Between the lines, in the lines, in every little story I tell, with a Map for the Journey and a Compass for the Way I am writing this treatise for you. I want you to know this. I want you to know this deeply!

That said, let’s continue.

Where were we?

Oh yes, I remember.

Frame of Reference. Relationship of Post-Bang to Pre-Bang Universe. The Map.

 The Map

The Spectrum of Magnitudes in the 4th spatial dimension is the integral path that leads to the Edge and End of the atomic-molecular Physical Universe and continues on into the Universe of Energy and Particles from which the entire Atomic-Stellar-Galaxy Universe materialized and evolved. As the Cosmos is vast and contains more than one universe, in order to remain oriented, and in order to comprehend the relationship of each component part to its respective composite whole, we must define our frame of reference for each magnitude we bring into view within this interrelated Spectrum of Magnitudes that encompasses the breadth and depth of all Existence: Cosmos, Universe, Galaxy, Solar System, Earth, Microcosm of Man.

According to this Theory of Evolution, the Pre-Bang Universe and Post-Bang Universe, which are synonymous with the pre-atomic Universe of Energy and Particles and the atomic-molecular Physical Universe, coexist throughout the space of the visible universe. The relationship between these two Universes can be viewed at different levels of magnitude. And depending on the frame of reference and level of magnitude we enter and explore, different aspects of the constituent nature of the two universes become visible. As we move inward on the axis of the 4th spatial dimension, we move from regions Known into regions Unknown. Using the Sphere of Cosmos in the 4th Spatial Dimension as the overall frame of reference, we have the means to remain geometrically, mathematically and spatially oriented at all magnitudes of 3-dimensional perspective as we explore unknown regions within the Cosmos, Universe, Galaxy, Solar System, Earth and Microcosm of Man.

Cosmos. The Sphere of Cosmos in the 4th Spatial Dimension is a 4-dimensional Sphere that geometrically represents the Cosmos and all its Universes. The Atomic-Stellar-Galaxy Universe represents the entire Post-Bang Universe. The Pre-Bang Universe of Energy formed the Pre-Atomic Particle Universe that gathered into the supermassive black hole densities that ignited the Big-Bang process that gave rise to each galaxy (Cone of Galaxy Evolution). All magnitudes of the Cosmos and Universes are aligned on the inside-outside axis of the 4th spatial dimension, which forms the radius and radial Space of the Cosmos. This 4-dimensional geometry of the Cosmos can be looked at and experienced as a Sphere, a Cone, or a Tunnel. The Cone of Cosmos in the lower left quadrant of the diagram is a cone segment of the Sphere and contains corresponding segments of all the Universes in the Cosmos. If you look at the center of the Sphere where all the radial lines converge to a point, and look at that point as if it is a point in the distance, like an optical illusion that shifts from Sphere to Tunnel, you will be able to visualize the Spectrum of Magnitudes of the Cosmos as a Tunnel in the 4th Spatial Dimension. When you look at the center of the Sphere of Cosmos, you are looking through the Tunnel of Cosmos past Horizons of Magnitude toward a Horizon Point in the distance. Likewise, the Cone of Cosmos can also be looked at either as a Cone or a Tunnel, a Tunnel that appears to be decreasing in diameter toward a horizon point in the distance. The Spectrum of Magnitudes in the 4th Spatial Dimension is the geometrical and mathematical axis line that makes this Sphere and Cone and Tunnel of the Cosmos comprehensibly visible to our Consciousness Vision. Looking at the Sphere and Tunnel of the Cosmos as a whole, the Atomic-Stellar-Galaxy Universe is the entire Post-Bang Universe including all the atoms and stars and galaxies in the Cosmos. The Atomic-Stellar-Galaxy Universe is bounded by the supermassive black hole densities that ignite into the Big-Bang on one side and the stellar black holes that extinguish atomic existence on the other side. Collectively, these black hole densities form a black hole Line of Implosion that separates the Universes. In the 4th spatial dimension, these Lines of Implosion between the Universes form Lines of Magnitude in the Sphere and Cone and Tunnel of the Cosmos. The Atomic-Stellar-Galaxy Universe is identical with the Atomic-Molecular Physical Universe and Post-Bang Universe, which are simply different words that emphasize different aspects of universe formation to help us conceptually view our universe from different frames of reference in different ways. Atomic-Stellar-Galaxy Universe emphasizes all magnitudes; Atomic-Molecular Physical Universe emphasizes the tangible, structural universe we experience; Post-Bang Universe emphasizes the points and process of Big-Bang origin of the universe. The Pre-Atomic Particle Universe can likewise be viewed from different perspectives: as the 200 known particles that are not part of the structure of the atom and therefore not part of the atomic-molecular structure of the physical universe; as the pre-atomic particles that gather into the supermassive density and become strong force bound into the atomic nucleus of hydrogen at the site of the Big-Bang; or as the neutrinos that are flying through the Inner Space of planet Earth.

If with your mind’s eye you move your Locus of Vision to outside the base of the Cone of Cosmos in the left lower quadrant of the geometrical map, you can look down the length of the Cone from base to apex, or down the length of the Tunnel from its outer circumferential Horizon Line of Magnitude to its inner Horizon Point, depending on whether you focus on the cis- or trans-side of the optical illusion that presents itself as either a Cone or a Tunnel. Looking at the Cone of Cosmos from the outside, you are looking at a 4-dimensional conical segment of the Sphere of Cosmos. Looking from the base of the Cone of Cosmos toward the inside, you see the Spiral and the Radius of the Cone of Cosmos (inset at lower left). The Radius of the Cone is the inside-outside axis of the 4th spatial dimension defining the conical segment. The Spiral is the 3-dimensional Space-Space Continuum of the Spectrum of Magnitudes within the 4th spatial dimension of the Cone. The intersection of the Radius and Spiral defines the circumferential Horizons of Magnitude in geometrical terms, as was previously described. The Cone of Cosmos is a representative sample of the Sphere of Cosmos. As you look at the Cone of Cosmos in the diagram with your Physical Vision, if we rotate the Cone toward your Locus of Vision as you look at the center of the diagram, your Consciousness Vision will be able to see the base of Cone rotate toward you until it is an end-on view within the Sphere of Cosmos. If we move your Locus of Consciousness Vision closer to the Base of Cone so the circumference of the Cone enlarges until it corresponds to the circumference of the Sphere of Cosmos in the diagram (making the base of the inset Cone larger by moving closer to it), your Physical Vision will now be looking at a more detailed rendering of the base of the Cone of Cosmos and its content of Universes, i.e., a “magnified” view of the Cone of Cosmos viewed from base to apex. Now the diagram you are looking at has been transformed from a Sphere of Cosmos into a representative Cone of Cosmos viewed on-end. And once again, as you look at the center of the diagram where the radial axes converge to a point, as a natural optical illusion, the geometry can be looked at as either a Cone or a Tunnel, or as a smaller representative Sphere of Cosmos framed by the Base of Cone. Whereas in the Sphere of Cosmos as a whole, the Cones of Galaxy Evolution in the Atomic-Stellar-Galaxy Universe represent all the galaxies in the Cosmos, this end-on view of the Cone of Cosmos only contains the proportional number of galaxies contained within the representative Cone. Having rotated the Cone of Cosmos toward you so that you are looking inside the cone from base to apex on the axis of the 4th spatial dimension, you are now looking at the same radial array of Universes that you saw in the Sphere of Cosmos as a whole, except the number of galaxies in the Atomic-Stellar-Galaxy Universe are proportionately fewer in number. These Sphere, Cone and Tunnel perspectives each show the geometrical relationship of the Post-Bang Universe to the Pre-Bang Universe on the axis of the 4th spatial dimension. The “magnified” end-on view of the Cone of Cosmos is the geometrical template for the Unit of Universe in the Large Scale Structure of the Universe, i.e., Superclusters of Galaxies surrounding a Void of Space.

Universe. Recalling to mind the Unit of Universe I defined based upon the Void of Space, Radius, Marginal Line and surrounding Superclusters of Galaxies, the Unit of Universe physically corresponds to this Cone of Cosmos in the 4th spatial dimension viewed from base to apex. The Cone of Cosmos is a geometrical frame of reference by which the Unit of Universe can be layered according to magnitude in terms of physical structure on the axis of the 4th spatial dimension. This provides a geometrical frame of reference by which Consciousness Vision can view the large scale relationships within and between the Post-Bang Universe and Pre-Bang Universe on the axis of the 4th spatial dimension within precisely defined regions of the Large Scale Structure of the Universe.

Galaxy. In the Sphere of Cosmos in the 4th Spatial Dimension, within the Atomic-Stellar-Galaxy Universe, each of the Cones of Galaxy Evolution in the diagram represents the entire Post-Bang sequence of galaxy growth and evolution from ignition of Big-Bang in Quasar to Irregular Blue Dwarf to Elliptical to Spiral Galaxy. So each Cone of Galaxy Evolution corresponds to the mainstream sequence of galaxy evolution, and each 3-dimensional Horizon of Magnitude within the Cone of Galaxy Evolution corresponds to a stage of galaxy evolution visible through the Hubble Space Telescope. If we wanted to express galaxy evolution as a photo-finish at any particular time in Cosmos history, the Cones of Galaxy Evolution could be truncated to correspond to each respective stage of galaxy evolution with heterogeneous heights of cones or number of Horizons of Magnitude within each cone reflecting the diversity of visible galaxy stages in space. If with our mind’s eye we rotate the Cone of Galaxy Evolution from component 4th spatial dimensional view to composite end-on 3-dimensional view from base to apex, like we did above with the Cone of Cosmos to look inside the cone from base to apex, we will be looking at a spiral galaxy flat on, with the supermassive black hole at center (apex), surrounded by the globular halo of its elliptical remnant, surrounded by the dust-laden disk and spiral arms (base), with each stage of its evolutionary history visibly evident in its present physical structure.

If we want to locate the Milky Way Galaxy in the Sphere of Cosmos, it is one of the outermost Horizons of Magnitude in one of the Cones of Galaxy Evolution in the Atomic-Stellar-Galaxy Universe, the outermost Universe in all the Spheres of Universe that constitute the Cosmos. If we want to locate planet Earth in the Sphere of Cosmos, it is a point within one of the spiral arms of one of the outermost 3-dimensional Horizons of Magnitude in one of the 4-dimensional Cones of Galaxy Evolution in the outermost Atomic-Stellar-Galaxy Universe amongst all the Spheres of Universe that constitute the Cosmos. If we want to locate a human being in the Sphere of Cosmos, the Microcosm of Man is on the surface of a point called planet Earth situated within one of the spiral arms of one of the outermost Horizons of Magnitude in one of the Cones of Galaxy Evolution in the Atomic-Stellar-Galaxy Universe within all the Spheres of Universe that constitutes the space, substance and nature of the Cosmos.

This mainstream sequence of galaxy evolution corresponds to atomic-molecular evolution, because it is atomic evolution in the stars and molecular amassment into dust that accounts for galaxy growth and reformation from elliptical to spiral morphology. Hence, there are probably no planets in elliptical galaxies outside of the dust rings. And atomic evolution in the irregular blue dwarfs is at an even earlier stage. At the galaxy level, the Big-Bang process in the supermassive density at galaxy center and the stellar black holes in the galaxy periphery show the points of interconnection and interconversion between the atomic-molecular Post-Bang Universe and the Pre-Bang Universe of Energy and Particles.

Solar System: The Milky Way Galaxy is a highly evolved spiral galaxy and is therefore at the outermost edge of Cosmos evolution. Our solar system is in a spiral arm of the disk of the Milky Way Galaxy, the disk being the most advanced region of atomic-molecular evolution within the galaxy. The sun produces solar neutrinos as a result of nuclear fusion. Furthermore, as Nature’s own particle accelerator, the cosmic rays colliding with the atmospheric atoms surrounding planet Earth produce atmospheric neutrinos. This demonstrates regional conversion of atomic Post-Bang Universe back into the Universe of Energy and Particles.

Earth. The relationship between the atomic-molecular Post-Bang Universe and Pre-Bang Universe of Energy and Particles is definable by the Spectrum of Magnitudes in the 4th spatial dimension. Strong force binding of quarks and gluons into the nucleus of the hydrogen atom at the site of the Big-Bang in the supermassive black hole density at galaxy center separates the Pre-Bang Universe from the Post-Bang Universe. The Pre-Bang Universe and Post-Bang Universe coexist throughout the space of the visible physical universe and galaxy, including within the Inner Space of Earth and Man. The nucleus of the hydrogen atom is the Edge and End of the atomic-molecular Physical Universe in the 4th spatial dimension. When the Earth is plotted as an Elongated Sphere in the 4th spatial dimension, the Inner Space of Earth contains both the atomic-molecular Physical Universe, from which the structure of planet Earth is made, and the Universe of Energy and Particles, such as the neutrinos that fly through the Inner Space of Earth. Within the Inner Space of Earth, the Macroscopic Line and Atomic Line and Particle Line are markers of the 4th spatial dimension, and the Atomic Line is the boundary Edge and End of the atomic-molecular Physical Universe within the Inner Space of Earth and the Microcosm of Man.

Microcosm of Man.  Human beings directly experience the Cosmos, Universe and Earth only through their senses. Physical Vision is limited to 3-spatial dimensions. Consciousness Vision within the Inner Space of Man makes it possible to visualize and virtually experience all magnitudes of the Cosmos, Universe and Earth in the 4th spatial dimension. By freeing the power of our vision and the limits of our consciousness from the macroscopic constraints of our organic Physical Vision, it is fully within the reach of our human capacity to geometrically map and experientially explore the 4th spatial dimension of the Cosmos.

Exploring the 4th Spatial Dimension

In the past, Copernicus and Galileo were faced with two enormous obstacles that had to be overcome in order to bring a new intelligence to the world: the limitations of human physical vision and the limitations of collective human consciousness. In order for science to breach the gap and enter the Pre-Bang Universe of Energy and Particles from which this atomic-molecular Physical Universe was and is being materialized into form, we are faced with similar hurdles: We must methodologically increase the power of our vision and we must expand the capacity of our human consciousness.

As we move inward on the axis of the 4th spatial dimension, we move from regions Known into regions Unknown. Using the Sphere of Earth in the 4th Spatial Dimension as a frame of reference, we have the methodological means to remain geometrically, mathematically and spatially oriented at all magnitudes of Space and Mass within the Inner Space of Earth. In order to have the capacity to conceptually visualize the 4th spatial dimension that exists within the Inner Space of Earth, however, we have to overcome the limitations of our myopic conical vision as scientists when we look at the microstructure of Earth, and begin to recognize that each spatial magnitude within the microstructure of Earth exists as a 3-dimensional Sphere of Magnitude that occupies the entire Inner Space of Earth to the full. Once we are individually and collectively as a species able to visualize the enormous spatial expansiveness that exists within the microstructure of the Earth, and comprehend that each microscopic and submicroscopic cone of magnitude in a slide in hand is but a minute sample of an enormous 3-dimensioanl Sphere of Magnitude that is as large in spatial extent as the planet as a whole, and that over 99.9% of the atomic level of magnitude within the solidity of macroscopic Earth consists of Space, we will then be prepared to realize that there is a 3-dimensional Space-Space Continuum on the inside-outside axis of the 4th spatial dimension that extends through the full depth of the Atomic-Molecular Physical Universe and on through the full depth of the Universe of Energy and Particles that are contiguously coexistent throughout the Inner Space of Earth and its Microcosm of Man. This 3-dimensional Space-Space Continuum in the 4th spatial dimension interconnects all the magnitudes of mass and space that are encompassed by the Theory of Relativity, Quantum Theory and Superstring Theory because all magnitudes of mass and space (Planet, Atoms, Particles) align on the inside-outside axis of the 4th spatial dimension. Furthermore, not only does this 3-dimensional Space-Space Continuum in the 4th spatial dimension traverse and encompass all regions in the known universe but this uninterrupted continuum also geometrically and mathematically traverses all unknown regions in the Cosmos as well, including the entire Pre-Bang Universe, because the axis of the 4th spatial dimension mathematically spans all possible magnitudes of substance, mass and space in the Cosmos. Consequently, we have a method and means to always know where the threshold of our knowledge currently is and what the limits of our visual capacities are within the Space of the Cosmos as a geometrical and mathematical whole.

Within this framework we can scientifically explore and define the Pre-Bang Universe of Energy and Particles that coexists with the Atomic-Molecular Post-Bang Universe and begin to systematically examine the interfacial relationships between these two universes at all levels of magnitude. Before we plunge into the Unknown, however, as these regions have traditionally been filled with blind assumptions and all kinds of myths about demons and gods, we now need to carefully recalibrate the tools of our intelligence before we venture inward.

Evolution of the Senses

We directly experience existence only through our senses, and we need every sense within our power in order to thrive and survive. The Cosmos, Universe and Earth existed long before there were any living creatures with sense-organ capacity to Experience Existence. Sense organ evolution is evident in the phylogeny of the species. Each of the physical senses—touch, taste, smell, hearing, sight—has slowly evolved in response to natural environmental forces in Existence, endowing creatures with the capacity to directly experience their environment and survive, and thereby the capacity for Experience of Existence has gradually evolved on this planet in an ongoing fashion. Sense perception is the only means we have to experience the universe around and within us. The evolutionary nature of physical consciousness can be appreciated by imagining what it would be like to be alive without each of our sense organs. Imagine moving back through our evolutionary past until you lose your organs of sense one by one, until you lose your eyes and lose your ears and have only tactile sensation to get you by. What would the universe be like for such a creature? Can you imagine what it was like for Helen Keller to thrive in the world around her? Imagine what it is like being a Worm. Mr. and Mrs. Worm have no eyes, no ears, only tactile sensation by which to experience and feel their way blindly through the world. Yet with only touch and feeling they are able to sense and perceive and survive in their surroundings—at least until an unexpected and incomprehensible warm sensation picks them up and plunges a fishhook into their tender body. Not only have we creatures slowly evolved species by species but each of our sense organs has slowly evolved as well, sense by sense, from touch to taste to smell to hearing to sight. And as our sense organs have evolved, our Experience of Existence has evolved.

Vision orients us in Space. Although our other senses orient us to conditions and movements locally, it is by means of vision that we are able to take bearings and perceive where we are in our spacious surroundings. Vision therefore is the sense capacity that orients us at large in 3-dimensional space. We human beings however live in a universe that consists of 4 spatial dimensions, but our power of vision is limited to only 3 spatial dimensions. So in a very real way, we are blind to a Dimension of Existence around and within us. As I look at the trajectory of our evolutionary past, this blindness within our species to the existence of the 4th spatial dimension causes me to pause and wonder. There is no reason to think that the evolution of our senses and the evolution of our intelligence as a species is not still ongoing. Surely this species of ours, this chaotic mixture of enlightened genius and cruel war-loving brutality on this Earth is not locked into final non-evolving form.

Sometimes I think we have more sense capacity to experience the 4th spatial dimension than we realize. Sometimes when I close my eyes to rest my mind from the wheel and trap of incoming thoughts, and simply rest in the inner space inside me, the space of my mind seems to expand and become perceptually more present in my awareness, and my consciousness begins to drift and wander in the spacious place we all know and experience as our mind. And in the restful stillness of this inner space, though my thoughts are silent and my eyes are closed, sometimes lights and pictures begin to appear, and I find myself immersed in a world of moving images that are showing me sights and sense impressions I have never seen before: Images. Moving images. Imagination. Dreams. During the day. During the night. So ordinary. So amazing. What organ of sense is experiencing all these sights? Our mind of course, but what is the nature of our mind’s eye, our consciousness vision that is so aptly able to naturally see light and forms and colorful images moving in the space of our mind?

By reflecting upon the inner dimensional nature of consciousness experience, which I have been inclined to do for the last 25 years, I have come to realize that the active force and impetus of the forward edge of evolution within any species can only be perceived and recognized as experience. Within any species, evolution is a gradual process that occurs increment by increment, individual by individual, generation by generation. As an individual within the species, this incremental process of sense organ evolution always begins as an experience, which is initially always an incomprehensible experience. Why? Because the Nature of Evolution progresses sequentially from Existence to Experience to Knowledge, for it is from patterns of experience that knowledge is born into consciousness, and it is knowledge that finally makes experience comprehensible. Each sense organ in the species evolved in response to natural forces in the existent environment. Sound was the environmental force that gave rise to the evolution of the ears. Light was the environmental force that gave rise to the organic evolution of the eyes. Such that the gradual evolution of these sense organs can be traced through the phylogeny of the species. So each time a new sense organ begins to incrementally appear within a species, the process always has to begin in individual members of the species as an Experience. Now what do you think it is like when individual members of a species begin to experience the unfolding of an entirely new sense capacity? Could Mr. and Mrs. Worm ever imagine what it would be like to see? If they could, and if they could see those five shadowy fingers reaching toward them with a glinting harpoon at the ready to thrust into their sensitive little bodies, I bet the next stage of their organic evolution would be to grow feet so they could run like hell! Well, fortunately or unfortunately, they don’t have to watch and worry about what is approaching them because it is entirely beyond their sense organ capacity. So they can just enjoy life until they suddenly get speared.

When I let my mind wander and wonder around like this, which I seem to have a tendency to do from time to time, I realize that sense capacity evolves first and motor capacity evolves next: First we experience Existence, which is always a sensation experience; then we evolve the capacity to respond to what we sense and experience in a manner that hopefully helps us to survive long enough to comprehend and understand the pattern and significance of what is happening to us. I sometimes wonder what it was like for the first sightless creature to begin to sense and experience the Existence of Light, the likes of which the creature had never experienced before. That must have been quite a sensational Experience! I can imagine how it all started: probably as a glimmer or dim impressions of luminescence and movements that were utterly unfamiliar and incomprehensible. And, whenever there happened to be a bolt of lightning nearby, a sudden complete undoing of its placid world of darkness that either fascinated it into a functionless state or sent it scurrying in utter terror. Then, as the newborn sense capacity evolved another increment, the shades and shadows of movement begin to make a more frequent visitation that sends the poor little creature crawling at max-fear speed and bewildering overdrive in opposite directions and every which way every time its dark little world is pounced upon by a shimmer, glimmer, blip, spark, sparkle, growing sparkle-glow. Like the befuddled experiencer is losing its tiny little mind! And as far as its nearby neighbors were concerned, is going—Berserk!

I know you think I must be digressing, but I’m not. As a Locus of Consciousness Vision, I am trying to show by means of narrative how our Knowledge of Existence depends upon our Experience of Existence, how our Experience of Existence is an evolving process within our species, and how the evolution of sense capacity within individual members of our species always begins as incomprehensible subjective experiences. Repetition of subjective sense experiences within individuals becomes recognizable as a pattern of consciousness experience within the species. Initially, the gathering of these experiential phenomena into knowledge begins as a fragmentary process that results in superstition, folklore and mythical interpretations and blind belief before knowledge evolves into more refined scientific form, such as for example human society’s response to individuals who were discovered to harbor incomprehensible consciousness visions and experiences: Witches were put to death in the 17th century. Lunatics were imprisoned in asylums in the 19th century. Psychotics were hospitalized and given hypoglycemic insulin shock treatments and electroconvulsive shock treatments in the 20th century.

We are able to decipher the Nature of Existence by observation and application of the scientific method. However, our decipherment of the Nature of Existence depends upon our capacity for intelligence, which depends upon the veracity of our information and knowledge, which depends upon the data of our individual and collective human experience as a species, which depends upon the freedom of our individual consciousness capacity to explore and experience Existence. If individual human capacity for consciousness experience, which is freedom of mind, is forced to conform to the forms and confining limits of standardized collective human consciousness, the growth and evolution of consciousness and intelligence within our species becomes retarded. Religion is famous for this, nullifying the evolution of scientific intelligence in order to preserve its institutional authority and maintain its grip upon individual and collective human consciousness of our species. Unfortunately, Science is also famous for this, nullifying the existence and evolution of individual human consciousness experiences that don’t conform to its institutionally established definitions of “Normal”.

There is an enormous difference between what is normal human consciousness and what is natural human consciousness. Normal is a statistical bell-curve distribution definition based upon population analysis of visible and measurable aspects of yesteryears collective human consciousness. This data is derived from what is surfaced into visibility by individual members of our species. Conditioning of each individual by the powerful forces within the collective human consciousness of society, however, not only affects the consciousness of each individual but also profoundly influences the expression of consciousness experiences by each individual, because each individual is profoundly influenced by his/her surrounding culture and society. Although human consciousness has evolved and continues to evolve from Existence, the expression of individual consciousness experience is profoundly modified by conditioning. Consequently, within the invisible collective consciousness (Collective Unconscious) of our species, which is the sum of individual consciousness experiences that are not surfaced into visibility by the individual members of society due to the conditioning and influence of society (Collective Consciousness) that determines what is acceptable and not acceptable, what is normal and not normal, what is considered “real” versus “not real” consciousness experience within individuals, which in turn determines whether individuals will be accepted or rejected by their respective society, there is sealed from sight an untapped reservoir of naturally occurring human consciousness Experiences that remain inaccessible to collective human awareness and scientific Knowledge.

Not only do we human beings live in a universe that consists of 4-spatial dimensions but our physical bodies consist of 4-spatial dimensions as well. Yet we as a species have only had the capacity to see and realize 3- of the 4-spatial dimensions that exist around and inside each and every one of us.

Why?

If there are 4-spatial dimensions, why do we human beings not directly sense, perceive, experience and realize the existence of the 4th spatial dimension? Is it because we as a species lack the sense organ capacity to directly experience the 4th spatial dimension? Or are we at a stage of evolution wherein we do directly experience the 4th spatial dimension but our individual and collective Experience as a species have not as yet been formulated into Knowledge that renders the Patterns of Experience comprehensible. In other words, in the evolutionary sequence that progresses from Existence to Experience to Knowledge, what stage of evolution are we at as a species relative to direct sense perception of the 4th spatial dimension?

Each sense organ evolved in response to existent environmental forces, and the evolutionary appearance of each new sense capacity within the species had to begin as an unprecedented and unpredictable new experience, because each sense capacity—touch, taste, smell, hearing, sight—is so entirely different as an Experience. As sense organ evolution is in evidence throughout the phylogeny of the species, when a new sense capacity begins to make its appearance within individual members of the human species, what will the experience be like? There is no precedent to compare it to because each sense capacity is so entirely different. As the universe consists of 4-spatial dimensions, and as sense organ capacity evolves in response to existent environmental forces, if a new sense organ capacity began to appear in our species that can directly sense and experience the inner depth of the 4th spatial dimension, what would that experience be like? And what would happen to individual members of our species who began to have inner experiences that were incomprehensible not only to themselves but also to everybody around them? By definition they would not be normal, because normal is statistically derived from the bell-curve distribution of the population as a whole. However, as evolution is an ongoing process that occurs incrementally individual by individual and generation by generation and millennium by millennium, I suppose if the new sense perception experience happened often enough, the pattern of the experience would enter collective human awareness and become recognized for what it is: the emergence of a new form of consciousness experience capacity within our species. Or would the inertia of collective human consciousness resist its own natural evolution to higher states of consciousness experience?

What if 10% of the human species was surfacing into public visibility with altered states of consciousness experience of an inner dimensional nature, and what if every one of them was being certified as neurotic, psychotic or insane? Psychiatrically diseased! Mentally deranged! What effect would that have upon the evolution of consciousness experiences within our species? Or worse. What if that was just the tip of the iceberg? What if the majority of the species was beginning to individually have inner experiences they never had before, such that a substantial percentage of human beings were in the process of developing the capacity to directly sense and experience the 4th spatial dimension as an experiential phenomenon? And what if every one of them that surfaced into visibility was being certified as neurotic, psychotic or insane? What impact would that have upon individual members of the species who were beginning to have incomprehensible experiences within the depth of their own consciousness? Or worse. What about the impact of historical insanity upon the collective human consciousness of our species? What about the deep psychological impact of the “Holy Office” of the Roman Catholic Inquisition, using the symbology of God and prattle about divine authority being their justification to cruelly torture and murder human beings who did not conform and adhere to their dogmatic belief systems, which for 600 years created the worst imaginable hell on Earth by performing public ceremonial spectacles of burning human beings alive at the stake as heretics (human beings whose only crime was to have a different way of thinking about the Cosmos) and witches (human beings whose only crime was to be afflicted with auditory and visual hallucinations). What impact did that reign of horror have upon the evolution of individual and collective human consciousness and intelligence within our species?  Or, though less heinous as barbarous ignorance and cruel inhumane behavior, worse in terms of numbers in modern times. What of the vast numbers of human beings within the major cities of the modern western world who have been confined to mental institutions and subjected to surgical prefrontal lobotomies, and to neurologically injurious hypoglycemic insulin shock treatments, and to a series of electroconvulsive shock treatments in order to stop them from having consciousness experiences in the form of visual and auditory hallucinations? What impact does that practice have upon the emergence of new capacities for consciousness experience and the evolution of higher states of consciousness within our species?

I realize the speculative nature of that line of thought, and the seemingly incomprehensible nature of these kinds of consciousness experiences at the present stage of our evolutionary development as a species, but the Light of Day begins at Dawn! Evolution of Knowledge and Intelligence begins with a dawn of consciousness in individual members of our species, which often begins as an incomprehensible experience, as an experience that is beyond collective human knowledge and understanding.

The mind and life experience of each individual is formed by immersion within the collective human consciousness of the society into which he or she was born and bound to join by circumstance. Initially, the structure of each young and impressionable mind is formed by the inculcations inherent in cultural conditioning, and the individual becomes an undiscerning member of society’s collective human consciousness. A cog in the wheel. A repeater. A believer. A mindless leader. The emergence of conscious awareness within the depth of individuals leads to original insight, cognition, individuated intelligence, empowerment of mind, the ability to see. If the freedom and capacity to experience the natural nature of one’s own consciousness and mind is shackled, the collective consciousness and intelligence of our species becomes retarded.

Likewise, within the cycle and circulation and dynamic equilibrium that exists between collective human knowledge and individual human awareness, the consciousness and intelligence capacity of each individual and society as a whole depends upon the veracity and availability of accurate facts and information. Illusion is by definition an erroneous perception of reality, an erroneous concept or belief. If, for whatever reason, the collective human consciousness of any society becomes misguided or deceived into widespread acceptance of contrived knowledge and erroneous facts that do not accurately reflect Existence as it is, such that the propagation of illusion supplants all visible evidence of reality, society as a whole becomes disoriented and its individual members become blind.
